Experience paddling into the sunset deep in the sage filled canyons of the High Desert at Lake Billy Chinook. On this journey, you have the opportunity to see incredible wildlife and geology. The lake is comprised of three different river canyons including the Deschutes, Crooked, and Metolious Rivers. These canyons, composed primarily of basalt, reach up to four hundred feet in places providing excellent habitat. In the evenings, it is likely that you will see river otters, beaver, bats, and certain species of night hawks.

What: After meeting at the shop and gearing up, we’ll travel north to the magnificent Lake Billy Chinook. This reservoir is the triple junction of Central Oregon’s largest tributaries. The surrounding canyon walls reveal remarkable and picturesque geology dating back millennia including basalt, welled tuff, river bed deposits and much more. The calm water mixed with the reflecting sunset will inspire intrigue and connection to the high desert and your fellow paddlers.
