A great launching point for the aspiring life-long kayaker, Tumalo Creek’s Basic Skills Kayaking Class will prepare participants to confidently explore our region’s flat and swift waterways. Participants will learn comprehensive safety and basic paddle stroke techniques while enjoying the company and encouragement of other novice course mates and expert Tumalo Creek guides. Basic Skills Kayaking Class is suggested as a beginning or refresher course for visitors and locals of all ages.
Tumalo Creek guides are American Canoe Association (ACA) certified and have been guiding on the Deschutes and Mckenzie for decades.

What: Join us in our beautiful outdoor classroom on the Deschutes River as we introduce and practice the skills every new paddler needs. We’ll begin with a relaxing introduction to kayaking where participants learn about boat dynamics and appropriate gear. Then, we’ll dive into basic skills such as the forward stroke, sweep stroke, and ferrying. Basic Skills Classes are geared towards adults therefore a minimum age of 14 is required.
Dates: Summer, Thursdays and Saturdays 9-1pm (10-2pm spring/fall)
Tumalo Creek provides:
• spray skirt
• sneakers, river shoes, or wetsuit booties
• sunglasses with Croakies or Chums
• sunscreen and lip balm
• sun hat, rain hat or fleece hat
• synthetic top and bottom layers
• raincoat and rain pants (weather dependent)
