These boats are perfect for both the weeklong trip exploring the Puget Sound or an afternoon glide across Elk Lake. They are typically 12 to 16 ft. long. and have a slightly wider hull, which provides more stability while still assuring efficiency and speed. They have smaller cockpits than rec boats and have thigh braces for higher performance. A Day Touring Boat might have a little less storage space than a sea kayak and be shorter, more maneuverable and wider. Higher-end performance day touring kayaks are made with lighter weight and stiffer materials creating more glide off every stroke, which makes for easier paddling and less fatigue.
This is a great compromise for the kayaker who might spend most of their on-water time up at Sparks, but has ambitions to explore Victoria Island someday in their own boat. A great vessel to “grow in to.”
