Rumors of an Indian Summer in Bend, Oregon are confirmed!

Buy a boat and enjoy the beautiful weather while you can.

Where does the term Indian Summer come from anyway? The origins most likely derive from early New England settlers who would welcome the cold weather in the fall so they could leave their stockades unarmed. But if there was a warm spell they were in for it: this is when the Native Americans knew to attack!

Luckily here in Bend, an Indian Summer is a good thing. If you feel like the summer has slipped through your fingers this year, make a commitment to get out there an enjoy the temperate fall weather. (Local hint: you’ll have it to yourself, the crowds are gone!)

Take advantage of this time of year by investing in your very own boat and getting out on Central Oregon’s lakes and rivers. Come down to Tumalo Creek Kayak & Canoe on Labor Day Weekend September 1, 2, and 3, 2012, and check out our Annual Scratch & Dent Sale out on the back lawn behind the shop. There will be plenty of brand-new boats and SUPs with slight imperfections available to buy at up to 40% off. Area kayak and canoe representatives will also have some boats for sale from their demo fleets.

Where do these imperfections come from? Many boats and boards are shipped clear across the country, changing hands and trucks many times. No matter how well they are packed, a few nicks sometimes occur. Another contributing factor is when a customer is considering buying a boat and they demo it and it gets a little scratch. In both these cases, the boats and boards are basically as good as new!

This event is a precursor to Tumalo Creek’s Annual 10-Day Fall Sale, which begins September 23. Paddlers will have the opportunity to peruse some of the demo boats that will be released on September 23 and pick out the vessels they hope to buy at the end of the summer.

Tumalo Creek’s Labor Day Scratch & Dent Sale is three days only, so come down to the shop, try out a few boats, and plan to take one home. There is no better time of the year to buy a kayak or can

Many may even consider themselves connoisseurs. This month’s Pickin’ & Paddlin’ band, Eight Dollar Mountain, promises to deliver the right amount of knee-stomping-yahooing to please the beer-spilling crowd, while also appealing to those who appreciate the finer things: picking proficiency, harmony, songwriting, and of course, a great mix of traditional favorites.

Tumalo Creek Kayak & Canoe and the Bend Paddle Trail Alliance is happy to welcome Eight Dollar Mountain to the Pickin’ stage on August 29, 2012 at 6:30 p.m.

Don’t miss the “Paddlin’” portion of the evening from 4 – 6:30 p.m. when Tumalo Creek’s expert staff and area reps will be on hand to get you comfortable in a kayak, canoe or stand up paddleboard. This is a great opportunity to demo various makes and models and enjoy a beautiful afternoon on the Deschutes in the high summer heat.

Pickin’ & Paddlin’ attendees can look forward to great local food by the Pizza Cart, pints from Deschutes Brewery & Cascade Brewing ($5 per pint), and an evening of catching up with friends, and making new ones. Pint glasses will be sold for $12, and two beer tickets will be included in the purchase.

All money raised will benefit the non-profit, the Bend Paddle Trail Alliance, the organization that is working to transform the Colorado Dam into a whitewater recreation area.

These next few months are absolutely critical to the success of the dam’s transformation. Bend Parks & Rec has included the project in the Bond Measure that will be voted on in November, and it is more important than ever that the community shows their support by coming to the event and making donations to the BPTA.

The rest of this year’s line-up includes Polecat on September 19, 2012.

Mark your calendars for this year’s Pickin’ & Paddlin’ Music Series on the backlawn of Tumalo Creek, and look forward to uniting with new friends and old, swapping paddling stories, and enjoying and evening by the river. With your support, it will be just a few years until the whitewater park becomes a reality.

At Tumalo Creek Kayak & Canoe

Please join Tom Martin for a presentation based on his new book, Big Water, Little Boats; Moulty Fulmer and the First Grand Canyon Dory on the last of the Wild Colorado River.

This 45-minute program features original photographs from various 1940’s through 1960’s Grand Canyon River trips, including Boulder Narrows at 126,000 cubic feet per second in 1957. The presentation tells how Fulmer happened upon the McKenzie River hull design of today’s Pacific Northwest boats, and how he used that design to build his boat the Gem, Grand Canyon’s first decked dory. Martin will also touch on the building of a full-sized replica of the Gem and taking the replica through the Grand Canyon. He will show photo re-matching of original pictures from the 1940’s and 1950’s river trips. The program will be followed by a book signing.

Start them off kayaking or stand up paddleboarding at a young age and they will have the skills they need to succeed at some of the most enjoyable watersports around. Whether they want to run the ‘gnar in their kid-sized whitewater kayaks or explore some of Central Oregon’s most pristine waterways by stand up paddleboard, Tumalo Creek’s got an awesome selection of four-day camps offered throughout July and August that are sure to fit your child’s interest and ability level, all for an affordable $295.

Yak-A-Tak Whitewater Camp

If they dream of whitewater, the Yak-A-Tak Kids Whitewater Camp is offered July 23 – 26 and August 20 – 23. Paddlers will practice their roll in an outdoor pool and then move onto stroke technique and reading currents right here on the Deschutes or up at Elk Lake. The last day, kids who are ready will be challenged to run a manageable Class II section of a nearby river.

Our Yak-A-Tak Flatwater Camp is for young paddlers who are more interested in the views and getting a little exercise than a big adrenaline rush. This program is offered August 6 – 9 and August 27 – 30, and kids can look forward to exploring secret river trails and pristine alpine lakes, while aquiring all the skills they need to paddle their own boat on the next family outing.

Come help clean up our beautiful rivers and parks!

Throughout the day volunteers can expect to engage in a wide range of activities from removing invasive weeds, spreading compost around riparian plants and removing instream debris.

The crew from Tumalo Creek as well as members of the Bend Paddle Trail Alliance will be there all day and we look forward to cleaning up the river with you! To get involved contact Kolleen Yake at 541.382.6103 x33 or kyake@restorethedeschutes.org.
