Sunsets over SUPs at Tumalo Creek.

Join us for a mid-day paddle Tuesdays and Wednesdays in September.

We hate to admit it, but the sun is going down earlier these days and instead of paddling in the dark, we decided to move our SUP series to mid-day. There is still huge demand for this great program.

Drop the kids off at school and head over to Tumalo Creek for our SUP Opera series, a two-hour paddle from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays beginning September 6th and running through the month.

The deal is still $20 for a paddle, a board, pfd and light instruction.

Taking the KIDS Center Staff Stand Up Paddleboarding

KIDS Center Staff SUP through the Old Mill

Like most businesses, we get calls every day from non-profits and other organizations looking for donations and support. Most folks know about our work to support the Bend Paddle Trail Alliance (see Pickin’ & Paddlin’) and other environmental organizations like the Deschutes River Conservancy, the Upper Deschutes Watershed Council, and the Oregon Natural Desert Association.

We got a call recently from the KIDS Center. The staff wanted to go out stand up paddleboarding as a release from their stressful days working with abused children. We decided to hook them up, as we really believe in the work that they do. The are a prevention and diagnostic service, advocating for children, and providing therapeutic services for kids and their families. Learn more about the KIDS Center here.

Last Friday we took almost the whole KIDS Center staff out on the water and had a blast, and it looks like they did too!

Tour the Upper Deschutes by kayak, canoe or SUP

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011

Yesterday I helped to lead a nine-person kayak tour of the Upper Deschutes from Slough Camp, up to Benham Falls and down to the take-out just above Dillon Falls. Visitors who come to Bend usually experience the Deschutes on a relaxing tube float through the Old Mill to Drake Park, or on a wild whitewater adventure down the Big Eddy Rapid. Tumalo Creek’s half-day tour from the Slough Camp put-in gives paddlers a glimpse of both a pristine and peacefully calm section of the river close to town, but far enough away to offer an escape into wilderness: the perfect trip for a family with a 1 p.m. T-time or the desire to explore Bend’s trails or Breweries by foot in the afternoon.

Our tour explores the moving flatwater section of the river between two major rapids on the Deschutes River between Benham Falls and Dillon Falls. Both of these Class IV – VI rapids are only run by expert kayakers and at the end of our journey we took a walk down to see the massive power of the cascading river over lava rocks and down falls.

Bob is a retired Forest Service Prof and one of Tumalo Creek's most knowledgeable naturalists.

After put-in we enjoyed the uncrowded stretch of calm moving flat water, where even the most novice kayakers had no problem paddling up the gentle current. We are the only permitted guide service for this Upper Deschutes stretch of river and we only saw a few hikers and fishers during our two hour exploration. We are psyched to be able to offer an experience that feels so far away, but is yet so close to the amenities of Bend.

Our group consisted of nine family members reuniting at Black Butte Ranch for a family reunion and many of them were kayak enthusiasts, but some had never paddled a boat before. The newbies (athletic teenagers, go figure) easily picked it up and made their way to the front of the group soon after we departed. We worked our way upstream to the bottom of Benham Falls where we could see a little whitewater water ahead and could feel the strength of the current close to the falls. We took a short rest in an eddy behind a fallen tree where  Tumalo Creek kayak guide Bob Marsch gave us a naturalist talk about Newberry Crater and the volcanic history of Central Oregon. Bob is a retired member of the forest service and has a wealth of knowledge about the environmental geography of the land.

Thank you wonderful family reunion! I thought I was doing a unique thing by taking this shot, but apparently these guys got the smiles to be in other CO Brochures - Check out Paulina Plunge!

Our group then turned around and floated downstream to a river trail, which leads to the “slough,” or swamp-like area, hidden from the rest of the river. The water was clear and we could see part way down a long lava tube, which was formed at the same time as Newberry Crater National Monument. The family posed for a family reunion pic and then passed around sandwiches and fruit. There was a light breeze, which kept the bugs away, and baby ducks flirted around our boats in search for lazy crumbs.

We continued down river and took in the magnificent Cascade Mountains to the west which has been the site for many “Old West” movies, and grouped up to talk about how to spend the next hour: more paddling or a hike down to the falls and a quick and cold swim in the river. We had a lot of kids in the group who were happy to play in the waters by the take out, and we all eventually headed down the well-defined trail to view Dillon Falls. The Deschutes River near Bend is a place of extremes and our journey is a perfect metaphor for this river’s moods, lazy, to intense to lazy again.

The boys taking the lead out of the "river trail" out of the Slough.

Tumalo Creek’s 1/2 day Slough Camp tour can be done with kayaks, canoes and stand up paddleboards and is a great option for groups looking for something more scenic, active and peaceful than the Old Mill tube float with the added bonus of guides who will keep you safe and provide interesting facts about the great and wondrrous landscape that makes up Central Oregon.

Hobie Demo Day – Elk Lake – July 30

Tuesday, July 19th, 2011

Join Tumalo Creek Kayak & Canoe and Hobie Cat Company on July 30, 2011 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. at Little Fawn Campground at Elk Lake and demo Hobie’s fleet of fishing and sailing sit-on-top kayaks.

Imagine whisking through the water on a hot summer’s afternoon on the Cascade Lakes in a kayak that moves forward with foot pedals instead of a paddle. You are experiencing the grace and power of Hobie Kayak’s MirageDrive® system, which propels you forward with rudders underneath the boat inspired by the fins of penguins. These human-powered fins have the power of two Olympic swimmers, and for additional speed you can even attach a sail and transform your kayak into a sleek, wind-powered vessel. Anglers will appreciate Hobie’s hands-free technology and fishing specific boats, which they can outfit with a myriad of fishing accoutrements. Learn more about the MirageDrive® system by watching this short YouTube video:

Bring a picnic and the whole family and make a day out of experiencing these cutting edge boats in a beautiful setting.

To get to Little Fawn Campground from Bend, drive 35 miles up the Cascade Lakes Highway, turn left on Forest Service Road 4625, and drive 1.7 miles

SWF, 22, seeks fast, dependable SUP board

Rocking the Glide in open water

Looking to do some flat water cruising on your lunch hour? If a fast, steady board calls your name try out the Naish Glide. Built for speed but equipped with forgiving side rails, this board is sure to change your outlook on flat water paddling.

My history with this board goes back to the first day of the season here at  Tumalo Creek when I decided to take it for a lunch time cruise behind the shop, one of the many perks of my job. Our first date I will admit I was nervous, intimidated by the length and “race” aspect of the board. My legs were shaky, my balance off, my stomach had a queasy feeling as I eased onto my knees. I’m going to be honest, initially things were moving a little too fast for me, I mean this board was built to fly. The narrow 27 1/4″ width does take some getting used to, but by the time the glide and I reached Farewell Bend Park, we were going steady. The thick edges measuring in at 5 3/4″ made this board buoyant enough to compensate for my lack of paddling knowledge.

At this stage in the game I’m comfortable saying that there is no board I would rather go home to. With the both 12′ and 14′ lengths  the Glide can offer the same happiness to you, whether you’re a seasoned racer or an unlearned wannabe SUPer like myself. Be sure to come into the shop and find your life partner; or if commitment isn’t your thing try multiple at our  SUP socials Monday, Tuesday or Thursday night.

Float the River in Bend Oregon

Wednesday, July 6th, 2011

We can’t think of a better way to spend a sweltering afternoon than a relaxing float down the Deschutes River through the Old Mill District and down to Mirror Pond at Drake Park.

Tumalo Creek rents tubes for $10 for two hours and thanks to an efficient shuttle service run by Bend Area Transit, floaters can get a ride back up to the put-in at Farewell Bend Park for only $2.50. Other tour providers run a shuttle service on the days the BAT is not available, assuring that floaters can get a ride seven days a week, all summer long. This company charges $3.00. The shuttles generally run every half hour.

Float the river right from Tumalo Creek. Park your car in our lot, rent your tubes and then walk under and across the Colorado Bridge and put in at McKay Park. From there you will float down to Drake Park and meet the shuttle. You can then take the shuttle back to McKay and float that section again or ride all the way up to Riverbend Park and float back down to Tumalo Creek through the Old Mill District.

We rent comfortable, high-quality NRS tubes that have handles and netting underneath so you won’t fall through.

Tube rentals are rented on a first-come, first-serve basis so come down and visit us today to start your floating adventure. We are located at 805 SW Industrial Way, downriver from the Old Mill District, across from the Colorado Bridge. 541.317.9407.
